Cafe Britt <3

I visited an amazing Coffee Brewery in 2008 with a good friend, Cafe Britt.  It’s official hub is in Costa Rica. The place was spotless and the staff was incredibly friendly.  We took a guided tour through the brewery where they showed us everything! Where the coffee beans grow; how to roast the coffee, and yes we got samples.  The factory was orderly and a robust coffee aroma filled the air.

To my surprise in Mexico this past weekend I saw Cafe Britt products!  Coffee, candy, and more coffee!  I bought some of this incredible Britt products that are hard to find in the U.S and am sipping on a bold brew this morning.  It’s funny how certain smells and tastes can take you back to a different time in your mind.

In all, Cafe Britt is a must! Especially for the coffee lovers out there!

Coffee Paring Mood

When I have a nice hot cup of coffee I like to add some almond or soy milk until it reaches a creamy tan color.  Depending on my mood or the time of day I like to pair my coffee with a large scooped whole wheat bagel and plain shmear (as we say in my family). Ideally, I’d like to have a fresh biscotti with dark chocolate and almonds, if calories don’t matter–i’d eat it every day!  I have noticed though that not all people do pair coffee with anything not even a drop of milk. That especially goes for the older generations.  I wonder if with time we all become a boring cup of black coffee…I sure hope not. Image

Benefits: Coffee & Health

There are many reasons coffee can be beneficial for our health. Huffington Post had an article of 7 benefits of coffee!

  1. The caffeine in coffee could actually help you to spot grammar errors, according to a new study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology
  2. Women who drink a few cups of caffeinated coffee have a lower risk of depression than women who don’t drink any coffee, according to a Harvard study.
  3. May save our Brain! A study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease suggests that there’s something in coffee — though researchers have yet to determine what exactly that “something” is — interacts with caffeine to boost the levels of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GCSF), a growth factor that seems to be able to fight off Alzheimer’s disease in mice
  4. A Harvard School of Public Health study shows that men who drink six cups of coffee a day have a 60 percent decreased chance of developing a dangerous form of prostate cancer, as well as a 20 percent decreased chance of developing any other kinds of prostate cancer.
  5. Could ward off Cancer! New research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research conference shows that coffee could help to ward off basal cell carcinoma, the most common cancer in the world.
  6. Drinking coffee is associated with a lower Type 2 diabetes risk, with more coffee consumption linked to a greater decrease in risk, according to an Archives of Internal Medicine review of studies from 2009.
  7. Drinking a few cups of coffee a day could lower the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease by as much as 25 percent, according to a study published last year in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

OB-House Coffee Buzz!

There is a special local gem in ft.lauderdale that has Farm to table food, OB-House!  Everything is locally sourced except for their exceptional coffee which comes from a small brewery out of New Orleans that has been around for over 20 years.  It is said that the guy who makes this coffee, really knows his stuff!  It is quite apparent because the flavor of this coffee is so bold and fresh that it truly can not compare to most other coffee houses in South Florida.  There is one other cafe’ in Miami that takes pride in their coffee and brews in house, but that is something I will reveal to you another time. ;)

Coffee Pot Leftovers

For those of you who like to be resourceful I’ve stubbled upon a great way to recycle my left over coffee by creating coffee ice-cubes!!  All you do is pour what is left over in your coffee pot into your ice-cube trays and place in the freezer. You are left with brilliant, bold flavored coffee cubes to add to either your almond-milk or even your ice-coffee.  The genius of it all is you are not diluting your ice-d coffee with water.  There has to be more opportunities to recycle left-over coffee, I wanna know what you all do? Cheers!

The “Choffy Buzz”

I’m a huge coffee proponent, not only because of the taste but the antioxidant properties and the energy boost! However, I recently stubbled upon Choffy, it has made Oprah’s Favorite list.  They say that their product gives you all the benefits of Coffee without the withdrawals.

The facts:

  • There are more antioxidants in an 8oz. cup of Choffy than almost two servings of blueberries! Choffy acts as a super-detoxifier, helping your body rid itself of the toxins that tax your system, keeping you younger, longer.
  • Theobromine provides you with a healthy, heart-friendly, non-addictive energy lift without the crash or jitters of caffeine.
  • Drinking Choffy can help improve your blood circulation and even reduce blood pressure while protecting against vascular disease.
  • Choffy can give you that feel good feeling of being focused, alert and elated. Some people say its a little like falling in love.

This all sounds so good, doesn’t it? I have yet to try Choffy but, I will definitely order some and let you know! In the mean time if anyone out there has tried it, I’d like to know what your experience was with it.

I will say this, I am and always will be a coffee lover. :)

The K-Cup

The K cup or Keurig cups, are mini cups of coffee grids that filter though a machine to make a serving of coffee.  It was created in 1998.  Although, I think this is a genius quick way to serve up a cup of coffee especially if you have a one particular guest that is craving a cup I’m not so sure that the taste or quality is superior or comparable to a regular brew or pressed cup.  Personally I feel there is less control over the strength of the Brew and i’m not so sure I get a caffeine buzz.  I do however enjoy the Apple Cider and teas that come out of these cup! I’m wondering what others think about it, and if they have found a particular k-cup that brews an excellent bold, smooth fresh flavor of coffee?!  What’s in your cup?

Cafe’ opinion corner

Cafe’s in America are probably a more recent idea borrowed from the Italians in the late 1950′s. However, as most of you know coffee has been around for centuries. Cafe’ are ever changing. Some are dynamic and others distinguish themselves with various coffee art on their latte’s, some cater to the masses and depend on the fast-food crowds. I want to create a cafe’ in South Miami. I’m interested to know what people want to see different in Cafe’s if there are to be more of them. Personally, I think Cafe’s are the best place to meet up with a friend, loved one, catch up on work, study a bit. Cafe’s serve many purposes, I know one woman who comes around noon-time and sits writing a story book on her i-pad, daily. It is positively one of the most neutral public places I could think of to meet someone and feel comfortable. I want to see more cafe’s that are unique that are tailored more to the flavor of each community. I’m interested to know what the locals would like to nosh on, and what does the ideal coffee shop serve? Would it be limited to basic simple, organic ingredients, or would it be sugar filled with lots of delicious, yet not so nutritious drinks. I could dispel exactly what I see in the perfect coffee shop, however, I want to do my research and find out just what YOU the consumer, coffee savvy or not, would like!?  Please advise. I appreciate any feedback.
